What is the difference between RFID and traditional barcode recognition?

Mar 28,2023

Currently, production management systems based on bar codes enable various quality analysis and control to be easily implemented. Traditional barcode systems have both advantages and obvious disadvantages, such as being prone to contamination, damage, and the need to stop waiting for scanning one by one. The efficiency of batch reading is not high, and it cannot meet the rapid and accurate requirements.

The essential difference between RFID technology and traditional barcode recognition:

Barcode cannot obtain data information in real time and cannot be tracked in real time. For production lines, it will not be possible to balance production lines and solve production bottlenecks due to lack of real-time access to production information. For enterprise warehouses, it will be difficult to keep track of production progress due to lack of real-time statistics of finished products in the warehouse; For logistics distribution, real-time cargo tracking is even more impossible to achieve. All of this undoubtedly increases the difficulty of enterprise management, and management personnel are unable to fully grasp the enterprise, easily causing economic losses.

Barcodes are generally made of paper and printed by a barcode printer. Once the printing is unclear, there are folding marks, or even damage issues, the barcode gun is difficult to identify. Statisticians often have a headache when encountering unrecognized barcodes.

Advantages of RFID technology compared to traditional barcode recognition technology

Fast sensing: A barcode scan takes 5 seconds: RFID card reading takes only 50 milliseconds.
Reusable: After the barcode is printed, it cannot be changed. RFID can repeatedly add, modify, and delete data stored in RFID tags, facilitating information updates.
Penetration and barrier free reading: When covered, RFID can penetrate non-metallic or non-transparent materials such as paper, wood, and plastic, and can conduct penetrating communication. Barcode scanners can only read barcodes when they are at close range and free from obstructions.
Anti pollution ability and durability: The carrier of traditional barcodes is paper, which is prone to pollution. However, RFID has strong resistance to substances such as water, oil, and chemicals. At the same time, because the barcode is attached to a plastic bag or outer packaging carton, it is particularly vulnerable to damage; RFID tags store data in the chip, so they can be protected from contamination.
Small size and diverse shapes: RFID is not limited by size and shape in reading, and does not need to match the fixed size and printing quality of the paper for reading accuracy. At the same time, RFID tags can be more miniaturized and diversified.
Large data memory capacity: The capacity of one-dimensional barcodes is 50 bytes, the maximum capacity of two-dimensional barcodes can store 2 to 3000 characters, and the maximum capacity of RFID is several megabytes.
Security: Because RFID carries electronic information, its data content can be protected by passwords, making its content difficult to forge and alter.
